Transitioning and Extensions
Hair extensions are always an option for you to consider if you aren't sure about your transition yet. However, we strongly encourage you to learn to work with your real hair as soon and as often as possible and not to cover it up with extension hair all the time. If you transition solely with extensions, you will not be familiarizing yourself with your real hair and may be in for trouble when you decide it's time be wear your napptural hair - you won't know what to do with it! The ensuing frustration could lead you back to relaxing.
Natural hair weaves are a gentler choice because they give you the opportunity to see yourself with napptural, kinky hair. Also some methods for weaving (cornrowing) is more gentle on your hair than other forms of extensions such as extension individual braids.
Too-tight extension individual braids can do something scary - they can send you bald . If the extensions are put in too tight and/or left in for too long your hair will come out at the roots and your follicles will not recover quickly, if at all. You may be left with thin, broken off natural hair for years. Not to mention if you leave them in for months, they will begin to lock.
If you decide to wear braid extensions periodically, follow these rules for the health of your hair:

 If the braids hurt, they are too tight! Remove them immediately or tell braider to stop.
 Remove and re-do braids at least once every 6 weeks.
 Always deep condition your hair when braids are removed because the chemicals used in extension hair can dry out your natural hair.
 Leave hair loose for at least 2 days before braiding again.
 Keep your scalp clean.
 Don't wear too-long extension hair, this creates tension at the root.
 Don't wear styles that pull on the braids.
 If your hairline is breaking, (braids falling out, etc) REMOVE the braids!!
 Itchy scalp may mean mean dry scalp. Use a moisturizer like shea butter on your scalp (not hair).
 Itchy scalp may also mean dirty scalp. Make sure you cleanse your scalp thoroughly.
 Itchy scalp may also mean tight braids. If you see any little bumps on your scalp, remove the braids.
 Some people react to synthetic hair. If your head itches uncontrollably, remove the braids.
 Rinse shampoo or cleanser thoroughly from your scalp - buildup can also cause itchiness.
 Smelly braids may mean you haven't been rinsing and/or drying thoroughly. Product buildup combined with long-term dampness can mean an unhealthy situation of mold and yes, funky smell.
 If you find mold in your extensions, take them out and wash your hair thoroughly. Mold will damage your natural hair. Some people have recipes they claim eliminates mold from braids/dreds. Search the forums to find out.

Human Hair Extensions
Create Beautiful Long Hair Styles Instantly
As you glance across virtually every print medium such as newspapers, magazines and catalogs, there seems to be one thing in common as far as hair cut styles is concerned. The long hair cut style is everywhere. So what are you supposed to do if you don’t have long hair and you really want the long hair cut style? Well, let’s see, human hair grows about ½” per month, so if your hair is at ear level, that would be almost two years to wait for that ‘hair cascading down your back’ look. And of course by the time you grow your hair out, the short hair cut style will be in.
In today’s society, two-year waits are OUT and immediate results are IN. The beauty industry recognized the demand for instant long natural looking hair and thus today’s hottest trend was born—Human Hair Extensions. Hair extensions are not only for lengthening your hair, according to Rod Sickler, owner of Images by Rod & Company and Sexy Hair Concepts Artistic Team Member.
“Any hair type can support hair extensions”, says Sickler. Sickler makes hair extensions easy by creating cutting-edge hair styles for his clients. Some examples include sleek and straight hair, vivacious ringlets and striking color enhancements with the use of different highlighted and lowlighted hair extensions. He describes the hair extension process as very painstaking and challenging as it requires many hours and various techniques to complete. The rewards are many as he is able to re-invent hair, tweak techniques and fulfill his clients’ needs.
One of Sickler's hair extension clients, Holly Leach of Rantoul, Illinois says she wanted to get hair extensions because she was ready for a change and wanted Sickler to re-invent her look by adding thickness and length to her thinning hair with European Hair Extensions. She was absolutely amazed at the results. “I came into the salon (Images by Rod & Company) looking one way, and came out looking totally different”, says, Leach. Leach has had her hair extensions for about 5 months now, with absolutely no issues and no complaints. She maintains the hair extensions with non-soy based conditioning shampoo and moisturizers from Sexy Hair Concepts, and uses hair dryers and curling irons with no problems. Leach concludes, ”Hair Extensions are worth the time and money, when you can get fabulous-looking long hair instantly”.
Some women are concerned or have heard that hair extensions can cause damage to their natural hair, or even loss of hair. Guinevere Werr, Manager of The Spa at the East Bank Club in Chicago, Ill, says the fusion application method Sickler uses from So.Cap., an Italian company, does not create any damage to the natural hair since it is applied ¼” from the scalp and not directly on the scalp. Werr assisted Sickler with applying brown hair extensions with some highlight extensions to her sisters’ hair. She adds that Sickler's hair extension clients have lost almost no hair extensions and have had very little maintenance issues.
So where do you start if you are thinking of getting hair extensions? You must research the different types of hair used for hair extensions, the different types of attachment methods, the hair stylists’ education and training, any maintenance schedules and of course the cost.
There are a lot of different types of hair that are used for hair extensions. There is human hair and synthetic hair. Synthetic hair is used to add the high fashion colors, such as pinks and blues. Generally speaking, if you are going for the natural, it grew out of my head, look you should go with human hair. Human hair comes in many different textures and grades. The human hair must be strong and healthy to produce extensions that will last and wear without tangling or drying. European human hair is well-known as quality human hair used for extensions.
There are three basic techniques to attach the hair. They are fusion or strand by strand, weaving and bonding. There are many variations to these techniques and they are sometimes called by different names.
Fusion/strand by strand: This process is done strand by strand in small sections using heated adhesive sticks or glue specifically made for hair extensions. Extension hair is added directly to your own hair. Sickler uses the fusion method from the Italian company So.Cap. Hair is attached about ¼ “from your scalp and looks totally natural. Sickler comments, “No one can visually see that you have hair extensions. It’s up to you if you want everyone to know”.
Weaving is a process where a corn row or track is created around the head and close to the scalp. Extension hair is sewn on the tracks. Your own hair lies over the tracks for a natural look. Bonding is a process where bonding glue is applied onto the weft of the extension hair and then applied at the root of your hair. A weft is horizontal hair strands attached together at the top of vertically flowing hair strands. Wefts can be machine-made or handmade.
There are some disadvantages to each of these methods. Sometimes if the hair extension application method is not done properly, the hair extensions will simply fall out, or cause damage to your natural hair. Also, with additional pressure to your scalp from the weight of the heavy extensions, there could be some thinning of your natural hair and/or headaches as you adapt to the new weight. There have been some reports of allergies to the chemicals that are used. You should discuss the disadvantages of hair extensions thoroughly with your hair stylist so that there are no surprises.
The hair extension training and education your hair stylist has received is very important to the success of their work. Sickler received his hair extension training from renowned expert, Joseph Accola, and he keeps up-do-date on techniques by attending beauty shows across Europe where hair extensions are more popular than in the U.S. “Hair extension education and training are paramount to successful hair extensions for any hair stylist”, says Sickler. If you are looking for a hair stylist to do hair extensions and they don’t have the proper training, you could be very disappointed with the results.
After you have your hair extensions in place, you will need to schedule regular maintenance visits to check your extensions. How often you need to go back will depend on the type of hair and the method of attachment that was used. As your hair grows out, some of the hair extensions will need to be removed and replaced or touched up.
On a day-to-day basis you should treat your human hair extensions as you would long hair. Brush, shampoo, condition and moisturize on a regular basis. Some hair stylists will recommend specific high-quality hair care products to use with your extensions. You can also use hair dryers, flat irons, curling irons on most types of human hair extensions. Color treatments can be done on the hair extensions, but you should consult with your hair stylist before considering this. Monthly color touch-ups to your roots will not be a problem, as the hair extensions will not be touched.
Although it doesn’t hurt physically to get hair extensions, it may hurt you financially. There really is no way around this factor. To get good hair extensions on your whole head, you will need quality human hair, an experienced hair stylist, at least one assistant and about 6-8 hours of time. The ticket price can vary from $150-$2000 depending on what you are having done. Adding a few highlights or lowlight hair extensions can be quite less as the time and amount of hair needed is less.
In short, here are ten tips to follow after you have decided you want to get hair extensions and have selected a beauty salon. To find beauty salons that do hair extensions, you can look in the yellow pages or search online. The beauty salon directory at www.hairresources.com will allow you to search for ‘hair extensions in your City, State.
1. After selecting a salon, schedule an initial consultation to discuss what you would like to have done and any concerns that you have.
2. Ask about what hair extension experience your hair stylist has and where they received their training.
3. Make sure the hair stylist listens and understands your needs and concerns. Does he/she communicate well with you?
4. The hair stylist should ask you about your lifestyle, health, hobbies and your normal hair routine
5. An analysis of your scalp and hair should be done at the initial consultation to make sure your hair is in a condition for successful hair extensions.
6. Ask to see before and after photos of hair extension clients
7. Ask for references and be sure to call them
8. Ask how often the average client needs to replace the hair. This is very important for anticipating future costs
9. Get a written estimate for your hair extensions with an itemized list of the services required to achieve your new look
10. Get a written maintenance plan. Plan should include recommendations for products, grooming tools, follow-up appointments and any special instructions.
Hair extensions have many advantages and several disadvantages that should be addressed, but if you want to create an instant long hair style, human hair extensions are the way to go.

ORIGNAL

have you ever dreamed of long sleek healthy hair, flowing gently over your shoulders?
ColourNation is pleased to offer human and synthetic hair extensions in our soho salon by appointment.
We can remove old hair extensions as well as applying new extensions.
how long can you wait?
Typical human hair growth is 1cm / month so to achieve lengths of 50cm or more will take more than 4 years. Most people just don't have the time to wait to achieve this look. In addition many people's hair is not capable of surviving the stress and strains needed to achieve these lengths. Thankfully there is a solution. In a matter of hours we can give you the length you want.
extensions.
If you've never considered hair extensions (perhaps thinking it's only for movie stars and the like) we offer a range of options which should suit most budgets. We can offer both real human hair and synthetic alternatives. The pictures below show how hair extensions are added, they don't hurt in application or when wearing them. A little section of hair is glued to your existing hair as shown in the pictures below. Checkout our case studies to show how hair extensions could work for you.
extension care
When brushing use a soft bristle brush and work from the bottom brushing gently upwards.
Do not use a hard brush and do not brush harshly.
Do not use spray on conditioners or silicone based sprays as these can weaken the attachment of your extensions.
When sleeping gently tie your hair up and never sleep with wet hair.
Don't try and colour your own extensions it's best to let us handle that for you.
Running your fingers gently through your hair will avoid tangling.
tips
It's a good rule of thumb that extensions should not be longer than twice your own hair length.
Avoid tugging or pulling.
Use a soft brush and brush from the bottom up gently.
Natural extensions can be set, curled and coloured (in our salon).
It's perfectly normal for some extensions to slip out shortly after treatment (so don't panic if it happens) but if large numbers do this would signal a problem.

I Want Long Hair - NOW
As told to Karen Shelton by Alice Ridley5/7/2000Revised 2/1/02
Introduction
Ever since my hair all broke off about 5 months ago (we won't go into WHY it broke off) I have been considering hair extensions. (Before photo to the side)
I knew at that time that my hair was too short for them (it broke off about 1/4" from my scalp) but of course all that meant was I had plenty of time to research and think about hair extensions as an option for me.
While I waited for my hair to grow long enough (most hair extension professionals won't attach them until hair is at least 4-5" long) I looked on the net for more information. The HairBoutique.com by far had the most information, with articles on the different types of hair and the different methods of attachment. They also offer many different opinions from many different experts who don't necessarily agree.
I chose to go with real human hair, because it looked the most real, and to have Adrian the Dreamweaver of Shapes, Inc. in Dallas (photo to the side) do the actual work.
My total cost was around $1,600.00. I realize that might be very expensive to some, but this is my hair I was thinking about.
I wasn't going to skimp, and of course I had 5 months or so to save up for it :). After coming to a decision about those points, what I wanted was personal accounts. What did it feel like to have extensions? Could I brush my hair, wash my hair, sleep with them comfortably?
Alas, there are few places that have the answers to these types of questions.
So, before I relate my own experience of the actual attachment, I will address a few issues relating to hair extensions that others might be interested in.
Can I brush them?
Of course you can. I recommend using any soft bristle brush. In fact, I personally brush it thoroughly at least twice a day to prevent tangles and help distribute the scalp oils along the extensions to keep the hair shiny.
Basically, you can brush the hair, sleep on the hair, pull it up in a ponytail or a bun, anything you can do with hair that grew out of your head.
How long does my hair have to be?
My hair varied from 3-4" all over my head when I had mine attached, and this seemed plenty long. My hair is very thick, so I was lucky that they were able to attach additional extensions very far up on the crown of my head, which looks even more natural, as if it grew that way. If you are unsure, visit the extension artist you plan to use or send pictures, and they will tell you whether your hair is ripe for extensions.
Do I need to use special shampoos?
I was advised to avoid Redken CAT shampoo; for some reason this brand deteriorates the attachment bond that keeps the extension on the hair. All other shampoos were declared fit for use. I was told to add conditioner to the ends of the extensions, then comb through any tangles gently, follow with a shampoo on the scalp letting the suds rinse through the ends, then end with conditioner before a final rinse. My hair still feels great so far.
Do they start falling out?
It is normal to lose a few of the attachments as time goes on. A mass exodus of extensions leaving your head signals a problem, usually stemming from improper care or your own hair being too short to have extensions in the first place. If most of your extensions are falling out in large chunks, visit your extension artist to identify the problem. From my own experience, I am able to tug on the extensions quite fiercely and they stay quite attached.
What is they best type of extensions to get?
This is strictly a personal choice. I chose to use Adrian because of his reputation. I chose real hair because the look I was going for was a natural, grew-out-of-my-head look. Different methods and different types of hair result in different looks and are available in varying price ranges. Shop around, and do some research to help you decide what is best for what you are trying achieve.

I chose to go with real human hair, because it looked the most genuine, and to have Adrian the Dreamweaver of Shapes, Inc. in Dallas (photo to the side) do the actual work.
My total price was around $1,600.00. I understand that might be very costly to some, but this is my hair I was thinking about.
I wasn't going to skimp, and of course I had 5 months or so to save up for it :). After coming to a choice about those points, what I wanted was personal accounts. What did it feel like to have extensions? Could I brush my hair, wash my hair, sleep with them comfortably?
Alas, there are few places that have the answers to these types of questions.
So, before I relate my own knowledge of the actual attachment, I will address a few issues relating to hair extensions that others might be fascinated in.
Can I brush them?
Of course you can. I advise using any soft bristle brush. In fact, I personally brush it carefully at least twice a day to avoid tangles and help deal out the scalp oils along the extensions to keep the hair shiny.
Essentially, you can brush the hair, sleep on the hair, pull it up in a ponytail or a bun, anything you can do with hair that grew out of your head.
How long does my hair have to be?
My hair varied from 3-4" all over my head when I had mine attached, and this seemed plenty long. My hair is very thick, so I was blessed that they were able to attach additional extensions very far up on the crown of my head, which looks even more natural, as if it grew that way. If you are hesitant, visit the extension artist you plan to use or send photos, and they will tell you whether your hair is ripe for extensions.
Do I need to use special shampoos?
I was advised to avoid Redken CAT shampoo; for some motive this brand deteriorates the attachment bond that keeps the extension on the hair. All other shampoos were declared fit for use. I was told to add conditioner to the ends of the extensions, then comb through any tangles softly, follow with a shampoo on the scalp letting the suds rinse through the ends, then end with conditioner before a last rinse. My hair still feels great so far.
Do they start falling out?
It is normal to lose a few of the attachments as time goes on. A collection exodus of extensions leaving your head signals a problem, usually stemming from improper care or your own hair being too short to have extensions in the first place. If most of your extensions are falling out in huge chunks, visit your extension artist to identify the problem. From my personal experience, I am able to tug on the extensions quite fiercely and they stay quite attached.
What is they best type of extensions to get?
This is severely a personal choice. I chose to use Adrian because of his status. I chose real hair because the look I was going for was a natural, grew-out-of-my-head look. Different methods and different types of hair result in different looks and are obtainable in varying price ranges. Shop around, and do some research to help you decide what is best for what you are trying achieve.

Hair Extensions Gone Wrong As Told To Karen M. Shelton by Jean X.1/30/01
1. Why did you decide to get hair extensions initially? This was the first time I ever tried hair extensions. I decided to get hair extensions because I became impatient waiting for my own hair to grow longer. I had a Dorothy Hamill hairstyle and had been growing it out for about two years. I finally got it to one length and it was only at the bottom of my neck. I wanted to speed things up! I had heard of celebrities getting hair extensions so that is how I knew that there was such a thing. I figured, how hard could it be?
2. How did you decide to go to the hair extension person that you choose the first time? Did you hear about her froma friend or other source? Did you find them some other way? When I looked in the yellow pages of my phone book there was only one salon that mentioned extensions in their advertisement. I didn't know anyone else personally who has had extensions, so there was no one to ask. Only one hair extension expert was listed so I decided to just go to her. I was excited about the process and decided to trust that all would end well.3. How much time did the hair extension person spend explaining the process to you? Did you have an initial consultation where you talked about what the hair extension person would do to apply the extensions or did you just do in and have the extensions done at the same time as your first appointment?
They would not tell me the price on the phone. They told me that it depended on how much hair I needed.
I made an appointment for a free consultation. When I went to the salon, the hair extensions lady asked me how I wanted my hair to look. I replied that I wanted it one length, down to there (I pointed to where my bra starts). She said OK.
She then took a ring of hair samples and matched one to my own hair color. She left the room and came back with a weft of hair that was light brown. She showed it to me and said that they only use human hair. She held it up to my head and asked if that was the length that I was looking for.
She said that if I wanted her do my extensions, she could do them right then because she had the time. That is when I asked her the price. She quoted me $500.00 and said that I would have to come back every four to six weeks to have the extensions "re-done". The price for having the hair extensions "re-done" would have been $25.00 per weft. I told her yes, I would like the hair extensions done immediately. I was very excited that she could do them right away since I wasn't expecting to return home with my new hair!
She told me to go back out to the waiting area and have some coffee and read a magazine because she had to color the hair wefts to match my own color. It felt like 25-30 minutes that I waited. I didn't mind at all though because I was so excited about getting long hair. When she called me back to her styling chair, she just started sectioning my hair.
4. Did any of the hair extension people you visited (first, second or final hair extension person) show you a book of other clients and their hair? No. Noone showed me any pictures of extensions they had done. There were no pictures anywhere in my view. The first hair extension lady did not take any before and after pictures of me either.
5. How long did the entire process take? Did it take a few hours, longer, shorter?I walked in at 1 pm and I got into my car to leave at 4 pm. So it took three hours from the beginning until the end of the first process.
6. Did the hair extension person explain everything that they were doing as they did it?No. The first extension lady did not volunteer any information about what she was doing. Out of curiosity, I would ask what she was doing at times and she would then tell me. She didn't seem to mind when I asked her.
She did tell me, without my asking, that I could color/shampoo/blow dry/curl with hot rollers and cut the extensions. She told me to treat them like my very own hair because the extensions, according to her, were human hair extensions. So basically I was told that whatever I do to my own hair, keep doing with the extensions in.
The stylist stressed that I had to come back in four to six weeks to have the extensions redone. She also warned me that if I waited longer than 4-6 weeks, my hair would be all matted and then it would cost more money than the $25.00 per weft. She told me that this was because it would take her longer to work on me.
She told me that when I got home, if I felt the extensions were too tight and they hurt, I should dab ambusol (the toothache medicine) on the wefts with a cotton ball. The ambusol would numb my scalp and then I wouldn't feel the tightness.
7. What specific things would you tell people to beware of? Besides the problem of your real hair hanging over the top of the fake hair, what else would you warn them about?
That is a hard one. There are so many things that I learned. If I had asked for photos of previous clients with the first extension expert I would have noticed that her extensions looked like "caps". If I had gotten a list of customers to call, one of them might have advised me about what I was getting into.
Also, I should have taken more time before deciding to go ahead with the process. I was so excited about getting long hair quickly that I jumped into the whole process without really taking the time to consider all the possibilities. I just hoped that things would turn out right and they didn't.
After I got home and realized my hair extensions were a disaster I should have asked for my money back or asked that the extensions be fixed to my satisfaction. I am not sure that could have happened since the first stylist who did my cap extensions seemed to think that she was doing a great job for my hair.
It is also important to ask lots of questions. I should have asked how long she had been doing extensions, how often she did them, if she went to school for courses on the latest techniques.
I should have also surfed the Web to get information on hair extensions so I would have been better prepared for what to expect. I should have also asked how long it would take. Based on everything I know now, it should have taken a lot longer than 3 hours. That should have been a tip off.
8. Did you notice any lingering aroma from the extensions? Some people point out that the extensions have an unusually strong aroma because they are dyed and the hair is not real. I am not sure if this is something that is a concern or not.No. There was no aroma from the extensions. Not when she was doing them and not as the days went on. I did not notice any unusual aroma from the hair or the dye or anything else.
9. Did either of the hair extension people give you a list of products you should use on your extensions? No. They did not give me a list of products. I was told to use whatever I had already been using. I was told to treat my extensions as if they were your real hair.
10. Did they tell you how long the extensions would last? There was no mention of my having to buy new hair at some point in the future. The only maintenance mentioned was four to six weeks or else they said that my own hair would mat.

We know: All About Hair Extensions

What are hair extensions?
Hair extensions are strands or braids of synthetic or real hair that can be woven into your own hair to give it fullness, body, curl and color.

What kinds of hair extensions are there?
There are a number of types, which include:
Braid and Dreadlocks, which come pre-wound
Strands, which may include 20 to 50 individual hairs
Wefts, which is a cluster of hair gathered together at the top and loose at the end. They can be hand or machine made.

What are hair extensions made from?
Extensions are made from either synthetic (usually plastic) materials or real human hair. Whether you can dye or perm the extension depends on the type of hair. For example, dark, coarse hair extensions usually can't be color treated. Some hair extensions come already color treated. You can buy hair that is pre-colored, pre-highlighted and pre-permed with curl or body wave.
The cost of the extensions depends on the quality and availability of the hair. Natural blonde hair, for example, that has never been treated can be very expensive, while synthetic hair can be very inexpensive.

How are extensions attached?
Braids are usually woven into your natural hair.
Strands are sometimes woven, glued or clipped into your hair.
Wefts are often attached by first braiding small horizontal rows of your own hair close to your scalp and then sewing the weft extensions into the braid.

How long are hair extensions?
You can buy or cut them to any length up to about 30 inches. Most people buy extensions that are 18 inches.

What are the costs involved in hair extensions?
Besides the actual cost of the hair, you may pay to have the hair treated, and you may pay to have the hair attached by a professional. Beyond that, there is upkeep. This could include having your hair rebraided every 6-8 weeks so the wefts can be reattached, or having the strand extensions treated or removed by a hair dresser.

Barbara Lhotan's Journey With Hair Extensions byTA Arceneau10/04/01
Introduction
Barbara Lhotan, a fabulous hair consultant, a favorite contributor to HairBoutique.com, recently attended workshops to become a certified hair extension technician. Barbara recently invested several days attending intensive seminars and classes to learn hair extension techniques. She currently offers hair extensions services out of the salon she works at in New York.
Note: To make an appointment for hair extensions call Renaissance Salon in Smithtown, New York at 631-724-2386. You can also email Barbara at Ms.BarbaraL@hairboutique.com
Barbara first heard about the hair extensions when she read about Adrian The Dreamweaver on the HairBoutique.com site. After much investigation into hair extension systems she decided to take the certification training so she could offer the method to her existing customers.
HairBoutique.com asked Barbara to share some of her experiences with the classes. We also asked her to explain some of her thoughts about her new certification in hair extensions.
Listed below are some questions posed to Barbara about her work with hair extensions and her answers.
The only type of hair that I had never worked with was extensions. I decided that I really needed to make time to take classes in hair extensions so that I could stretch my learning curve and expand my knowledge base.
I found that learning about hair extensions was a wonderful challenge both personally and professionally. I also discovered that there is a vast market for this very rewarding work and I wanted to be able to offer it to both my current clients and future clients that may want this expertise."
Hair Boutique Question:What were some of the facts that you learned in the hair extension training that was a surprise to you?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"I was really surprised by the large number of people who wear extensions. It is not very well known how many people wear extensions but the numbers are astounding. Another surprising fact was that many men wear hair extensions to thicken thinning hair issues.
Nothing else about the hair extension classes was really all that surprising. A lot of the information was stuff that I was already aware of and had read about in the past".
Hair Boutique Question:What are some of the biggest mistakes that people make when they wear hair extensions?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"The biggest mistake that people make is that they don't take the time to get enough information in the initial consultation with the hair extension expert.
The mistake is not specifically about the actual extension techniques that are used, it has to do more with the client's ability, willingness and understanding about what it takes to maintain and care for the extensions after they are applied.
Hair extensions definitely require a certain amount of special care and maintenance to keep them looking good and lasting as long as possible.
Many people are not aware of this fact before they have the extensions applied. When they do realize the care commitment they may regret getting the extensions in the first place.
Another mistake is the cost factor. Many people are not aware that good extensions can cost in the $2,000 - $3,000 range or above. The least you can hope to spend for decent extensions is in the $900 range. Even then, that range relates to limited hair and extension range. Obviously people with shorter hair that are using extensions for thinning or hair loss issues will require less hair and time. They can get a good set of extensions for less than someone with the need for lots of hair or for added length.
Depending on a wide range of factors (hair length, thickness, hair texture, type of hair used) good hair extensions can be very expensive. It really is true that you get what you pay for.
Many people are wooed by very inexpensive hair extension systems and basically if it sounds too good to be true, it really is. Inexpensive or cheap hair extensions will tangle very easily, not last long and can be a nightmare to remove. They can also be more damaging to your own hair.
A good set of hair extensions involves a lot of work by the technician and requires the purchase of good quality hair. The hair alone can be quite expensive.
All of these possible mistakes can be avoided if a client takes their time and does their research to find out what is available, how much it costs, how long it lasts and whether it is right for them and their pocketbook."
Hair Boutique Question:Are some people just not suited for hair extensions?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"Absolutely. Anyone that has a sensitive scalp or hair may find hair extensions uncomfortable to wear. Also, anyone who has limited time and can't dedicate the required time for caring for their extensions should pass on the option.
It is hard to understand why people would take the initial time and pay the money to get hair extensions added and then totally disregard necessary care restrictions.
These issues should also be discussed with the hair extension expert before they make a decisions to have the hair extensions applied."
Hair Boutique Question:How long does it take for hair extensions to be added to a client's existing hair?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"It can take 6 to 8 hours depending on the fullness of the client's hair and any special treatments that may be required. Some people want the hair permed or colored after the hair extensions are applied. This can add to the time required to finish the process.
Another reason that it takes so long is because the hair extension process is quite painstaking. Individual sections of hair have to be carefully applied one section at a time.
One thing that most people don't understand is that after the extensions are added, the technician is required to cut and shape all of the hair (natural and extension hair) to integrate the extensions into the total style. The goal is to make the extensions look as natural as possible and match the client's existing hair.
This whole process is very precise and just takes time to get it done right so the extensions last as long as possible and look great.
Hair extensions technicians sincerely want to offer the client the best possible work. This takes time and willingness for the client to be patient with the process."
Hair Boutique Question:What are the hair extension upkeep requirements? Are special hair care products necessary?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"The main thing to remember is that the extension hair can NOT stay wet for any extended period. If a client is going to do a lot of swimming or participate in other water sports, it is not a good idea for them to get hair extensions.
It really is important to dry the hair as quickly as possible after it is wet. Yes you have to shampoo it but it needs to be dried right after the shampoo process is ended.
Why is wetness a potential problem? The coating that is used on the extension hair has a strong protein bond. When the hair extensions get wet and remain wet too long this will tend to increase tangling of the extensions.
The hair needs to be brushed twice a day to keep the tangles at bay. Because of the weave in the hair extensions and the fact that humans average a loss of 100 hairs a day, if you don't brush your hair on a regular basis, the natural hairs that are falling out will get tangled up with the extension weave. Tangles of any sort can be a major problem and often can not be repaired.
Major tangles may require that both the extensions and the natural hair are cut to eliminate the snarls.
In fact, one of the biggest complaints people have is that the hair extensions are tangling. This can be avoided with high quality hair that is applied correctly and taken care of properly. This includes using the right hair care products and keep the hair dry and well brushed."
Hair Boutique Question:Are special hair care products required?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"Yes, certain products are better for hair extensions than others. Every person who gets extensions may have specific needs. The best thing you can do is consult with the hair extension technicians and get their recommendation on the best products to use for your particular situation and hair type.
Lot of shampoos have sulfates that will actually melt the hair extension bonds. Dandruff shampoos are the worst for causing potential problems with hair extensions.
You also need to be careful of hair conditioners. Some products are just not compatible with the extension hair. The best bet is to ask the technician what products to use to maintain the longest life of the extensions.
Remember, the better you care for the hair extensions, the better they look, the longer the last and the easier they are to maintain."
Hair Boutique Question:How do hair extension technicians prevent clients from ruining their new hair extensions? Are there ways that the technicians can help the client extend the life of the extensions?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"The hair extension experts give their new clients a form that lists all the dos and don'ts about their hair extensions. The technicians ask the client to read the instructions for their hair extension aftercare and then sign it.
This procedure of asking clients to read and sign a form goes a long way to preventing problems because of misinformation about how to care for the extensions.
It also protects the technician. Many clients don't pay attention to the requirements for how to care for their extensions and then because of lack of understanding may cause their own tangling and other related problems."
Hair Boutique Question:Where does the extension hair come from?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"All of the hair that I use comes from India and it is pre-colored. It can actually be colored to match the client's hair before it is applied.
The hair is designed to be as universal as possible and tends to be wavy. The advantage to wavy hair is that it can easily be straightened or permed. Straight or curly hair might be harder to work with.
The hair is also completely stripped of the cuticles after it is purchased from humans and as it is processed by the hair extension company.
The hair can be ordered already permed before it is attached or it can be permed afterwards. It can also be colored or highlighted after it is attached.
The hair is flexible for most hair extensions needs and is easy to work with."
Hair Boutique Question:Can clients potentially suffer from allergies from the bonding materials or get headaches from having the hair extensions added?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"I think this is very rare. In fact, I have not personally ever heard of this happening. The hair extensions do not actually touch the scalp directly so it would be almost unheard of for anyone to experience allergic reactions from either the bonding chemicals or the hair itself. Anything is possible but I suspect that allergies are extremely unusual.
Headaches are also rare, but if they do occur it is because of the lack of ability of the hair extension technician. Poor techniques in applying the hair can lead to potential problems. Again this is a direct result of how the technician applies the hair.
If a client is having hair extensions applied and experiences a headache or allergic reactions they need to mention that information immediately to the technician. Like everything else involving hair, the client needs to maintain an open communication with the technician or their stylist so that adjustments can be made immediately.
Remember to always speak up, ask questions, be involved and express any concerns."
Hair Boutique Question:How long does a client's hair have to be in order to be qualified for receiving Great Length's extensions?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"A client must have at least 3-4 inches of hair for the hair extension method to work. Much shorter than that and the extensions would probably just not be anchored well or not stay in place as they should."
Hair Boutique Question:What is the longest length of most hair extensions? In other words, could we get hair that would go from our shoulders to our knees?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"Realistically 22-24 inches is the longest length that hair extensions are available in. Longer hair extensions just don't work for a number of reasons.
Since the hair extensions have to be attached to the hair approximately 1/4 inches from the scalp it is impossible to go from shoulder length to knee length. The length of your hair is limited with hair extensions to about middle of the back as a maximum.
It is impossible to have hair to your rear with hair extensions. You would need to have a full custom wig to achieve that type of look.
If you have short hair you are able to get hair to your shoulders.
Another consideration is the potential damage that can be done to longer hair. If you apply extensions to healthy long hair there is a risk of some damage.
If a client is looking to go from ear length hair to below the waist length hair then we really can't help them."
Hair Boutique Question:Is extending the hair length the only type of clients that want hair extensions?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"Hair extension methods really work fabulously for people with painfully thin or fine hair.
There are so many people that suffer with thinning or super fine hair that can benefit tremendously from having hair extensions added. It's not just length that people want. In fact, probably the majority of the people getting hair extensions want the added hair thickness. Just like everything else in life, people with thinning hair can be discriminated against because of their looks. Even if they aren't necessarily treated differently because of their lack of hair, they may feel that they are. Many people, especially women suffer horribly from hair loss issues.
Men have discovered that hair extensions are a great way to help them deal with thinning hair. Not only can it make their hair a lot fuller, hair extensions can be more comfortable to wear than other alternatives.
Hair extensions can also be a lot less detectable than other hair systems. A lot of men have really benefited from hair extension options."
Hair Boutique Question:What do you see as the biggest advantage for a client of getting Great Length hair extensions?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"The biggest advantage is that it greatly helps a client's self esteem. It is miraculous how having hair extensions added can make a person feel a lot better about themselves in so many ways.
I have met people whose self esteem was destroyed by bad hair. It ruined their lives. The idea that extensions could help them have a normal life is a great thing. People suffering from cancer treatments, alopecia or other heredity hair and scalp problems can conquer hair loss issues and feel a lot better about their looks.
In some cases I have seen how hair extensions added to women and men with thinning or hair loss problems because like new people overnight. It is very exciting to watch the transformation.
The most satisfying thing for me doing this work with hair extensions is to help people who are suffering needlessly from hair problems that have destroyed their own self esteem and their ability to function socially in the outside world.
It is a very rewarding opportunity to help people and I am grateful that I can do this work."
Hair Boutique Question:So hair extensions can be used to cover bald spots and patches?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"Yes they can. One caveat is that hair extensions applied to cover bald spots and patches just may not last as long as for other hair problems.
Hair extensions last 3-4 months with a full head of normal hair but may only last 2-3 months for people with bald spots and patches."
Hair Boutique Question:Is there a standard rule of thumb used to decide who should or should not get extensions? How makes this rule and how does it apply to the clients?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"Every person considering hair extensions will have different needs, issues and financial means. Each person should spend as much time as possible researching the pros and cons of having extensions added. Finding a good technician that you trust is very important. A good technician may even advise a client that they are not a good candidate for having hair extensions applied.
I know that I would not hesitate to advise someone that they should pass on having hair extensions added. I want to know that I am helping someone improve the quality of their life and feel good about their appearance.
If someone had a scalp that overly sensitive or lack of time to care for their extensions, I would definitely talk to them about the challenges that they might face with their extensions."
Conclusion
Barbara concluded this conversation by saying that hair extensions give her so much more artistic freedom. She can do a lot more with a client's hair that has been enriched with hair extensions. She just has a lot more hair to work with and can be incredibly creative. She loves this new opportunity to create new looks for both existing and new clients.
Hair extensions also bring in a whole new type of clientele that she gets to help and work with.

Prologue
Barbara Lhotan, a wonderful hair consultant, a favorite donor to HairBoutique.com, recently attended workshops to become a licensed hair extension technician. Barbara recently invested numerous days attending serious seminars and classes to learn hair extension techniques. She presently offers hair extensions services out of the salon she works at in New York.
Barbara first heard about the hair extensions when she read about Adrian The Dreamweaver on the HairBoutique.com site. After a great deal of searching into hair extension systems she decided to take the certification training so she could offer the method to her existing customers.
HairBoutique.com asked Barbara to distribute some of her experiences with the classes. We also asked her to give details on some of her thoughts about her new certification in hair extensions.
Listed below are some questions posed to Barbara about her work with hair extensions and her answers.
Hair Boutique Question:What were some of the details that you learned in the hair extension preparation that was a astonishing to you?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"I was really stunned by the huge number of people who wear extensions. It is not very well known how many people wear extensions but the statistics are astounding. Another amazing fact was that numerous men wear hair extensions to thicken thinning hair issues.
Nothing else about the hair extension classes was really all that startling. A lot of the information was stuff that I was already attentive of and had read about in the past".
Hair Boutique Question:What are some of the biggest mistakes that people make when they wear hair extensions?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"The major mistake that people make is that they don't take the time to get sufficient information in the initial consultation with the hair extension expert.
The mistake is not particularly about the actual extension techniques that are used, it has to do more with the client's skill, willingness and understanding about what it takes to maintain and care for the extensions after they are applied.
Hair extensions certainly require a certain amount of special care and maintenance to keep them looking good and lasting as long as possible.
Many people are not aware of this fact before they have the extensions applied. When they do realize the care commitment they may regret getting the extensions in the first place.
Another mistake is the cost factor. Many people are not conscious that good extensions can cost in the $2,000 - $3,000 range or above. The least you can hope to spend for decent extensions is in the $900 range. Even then, that range relates to limited hair and extension range. Obviously people with shorter hair that are using extensions for thinning or hair loss issues will call for less hair and time. They can get a good set of extensions for less than someone with the need for lots of hair or for added length.
Depending on a wide range of factors (hair length, thickness, hair texture, type of hair used) good hair extensions can be very expensive. It really is true that you get what you pay for.
Many people are wooed by very cheap hair extension systems and essentially if it sounds too good to be true, it really is. Low-cost or cheap hair extensions will tangle very easily, not last long and can be a terrifying to remove. They can also be more harmful to your own hair.
A excellent set of hair extensions involves a lot of work by the technician and requires the buy of good quality hair. The hair alone can be quite costly.
All of these possible mistakes can be avoided if a customer takes their time and does their research to find out what is accessible, how much it costs, how long it lasts and whether it is right for them and their wallet."
Hair Boutique Question:Are some people just not suited for hair extensions?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"Absolutely. Anyone that has a sensitive scalp or hair may find hair extensions uncomfortable to wear. Also, anyone who has limited time and can't contribute the required time for caring for their extensions should pass on the decision.
It is hard to understand why people would take the initial time and pay the money to get hair extensions added and then absolutely disregard required care restrictions.
These issues should also be discussed with the hair extension specialist before they make a decisions to have the hair extensions applied."
Hair Boutique Question:How long does it take for hair extensions to be added to a client's existing hair?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"It can take 6 to 8 hours depending on the fullness of the customer’s hair and any unusual treatments that may be necessary. A number of people want the hair permed or colored after the hair extensions are applied. This can add to the time necessary to finish the process.
One more reason that it takes so long is because the hair extension procedure is quite painstaking. Individual sections of hair have to be cautiously applied one section at a time.
One thing that majority people don't understand is that after the extensions are added, the technician is required to cut and shape all of the hair (natural and extension hair) to put together the extensions into the total style. The goal is to make the extensions look as normal as possible and match the client's existing hair.
This whole method is very strict and just takes time to get it done right so the extensions last as long as promised and look great.
Hair extensions technicians genuinely want to offer the client the best possible job. This takes time and eagerness for the client to be patient with the process."
Hair Boutique Question:What are the hair extension upkeep requirements? Are special hair care products necessary?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"The main thing to keep in mind is that the extension hair can NOT stay wet for any extended period. If a client is going to do a lot of swimming or contribute in other water sports, it is not a good idea for them to get hair extensions.
It really is important to dry the hair as fast as possible after it is wet. Yes you have to shampoo it but it desires to be dried right after the shampoo procedure is ended.
Why is wetness a potential problem? The coating that is used on the extension hair has a strong protein bond. When the hair extensions get wet and stay wet too long this will tend to boost tangling of the extensions.
The hair requirements are to be brushed twice a day to keep the tangles at bay. Because of the weave in the hair extensions and the fact that humans average a loss of 100 hairs a day, if you don't brush your hair on a regular basis, the natural hairs that are falling out will get tangled up with the extension weave. Tangles of any sort can be a major problem and often can not be repaired.
Major tangles may call for that both the extensions and the natural hair are cut to get rid of the snarls.
Each person who gets extensions may have precise needs. The best thing you can do is talk with the hair extension technicians and get their recommendation on the best products to use for your particular situation and hair type.
Lot of shampoos have sulfates that will really melt the hair extension bonds. Dandruff shampoos are the worst for causing possible problems with hair extensions.
You also need to be careful of hair conditioners. Some products are just not well-matched with the extension hair. The best bet is to ask the technician what products to use to maintain the longest life of the extensions.
Remember, the better you care for the hair extensions, the better they look, the longer the last and the easier they are to maintain."
Hair Boutique Question:How do hair extension technicians prevent clients from tarnishing their new hair extensions? Are there ways that the technicians can help the client extend the life of the extensions?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"The hair extension experts give their new customer’s a form that lists all the dos and don'ts about their hair extensions. The technicians ask the client to read the instructions for their hair extension aftercare and then sign it.
This process of asking clients to read and sign a form goes a long way to preventing problems because of misinformation about how to care for the extensions.
It also protects the technician. Many clients don't pay attention to the necessities for how to care for their extensions and then because of lack of understanding may cause their own tangling and other related problems."
Hair Boutique Question:Where does the extension hair come from?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"All of the hair that I use comes from India and it is pre-colored. It can really be colored to match the client's hair before it is applied.
The hair is designed to be as worldwide as possible and tends to be wavy. The benefit to wavy hair is that it can easily be straightened or permed.
The hair is flexible for most hair extensions desires and is easy to work with."
Hair Boutique Question:Can clients potentially suffer from allergies from the bonding materials or get headaches from having the hair extensions added?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
"I think this is very rare. In fact, I have not personally ever heard of this happening. The hair extensions do not really touch the scalp directly so it would be almost useless for anyone to experience allergic reactions from either the bonding chemical or the hair itself. Anything is likely but I suspect that allergies are extremely unusual.
Like everything else linking to hair, the client needs to maintain an open communication with the technician or their artist so that adjustments can be made right away.
Remember to always speak up, ask questions, be involved and express any concerns."
Hair Boutique Question:How long does a client's hair have to be in order to be qualified for receiving Great Length's extensions?
Barbara Lhotan Answer:
